Efficient Computation of Passive Seismic Interferometry
نویسنده
چکیده
SUMMARY Seismic interferometry is from a computationally point of view based on cross-correlating two signals. One application of seismic interferometry lies in passive seismics. In passive seismic recorders are placed on the surface of the earth and signals are continuously measured. In this abstract we investigated an efficient way of computing the cross-correlation, of a limited number of output samples, for continuously measured signals. Efficiency tests are carried out on two types of common of the shelf 64-bit CPU's: Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron.

Body-wave interferometry using multi-dimensional deconvolution after wavefield decomposition at free surface
Passive seismic methods using earthquakes can be applied for extracting body waves and obtaining information of subsurface structure. To analyze earthquake data, one traditionally uses receiver functions, tomography, and seismic interferometry. In this study, we retrieve reflected body waves by applying seismic interferometry to the recorded ground motion from a cluster of earthquakes. We emplo...
متن کاملTime-lapse monitoring of internal erosion in earthen dams and levees using ambient seismic noise
Earthen dams and levees are prone to progressive failure through internal erosion of their structure. Internal erosion is often invisible to current methods of inspection until it manifests itself at the exterior surface. This study focuses on the novel use of passive seismic interferometry to monitor temporal changes in earthen embankments caused by internal erosion. This technique uses the am...

Seismic noise interferometry allows the continuous and real-time measurement of relative seismic velocity through a volcanic edifice. Because seismic velocity is sensitive to the pressurization state of the system, this method is an exciting new monitoring tool at active volcanoes. Despite the potential of this tool, no studies have yet comprehensively compared velocity to other geophysical obs...

متن کاملSeismic interferometry by crosscorrelation and by multidimensional deconvolution: a systematic comparison
Seismic interferometry, also known as Green’s function retrieval by crosscorrelation, has a wide range of applications, ranging from surface-wave tomography using ambient noise, to creating virtual sources for improved reflection seismology. Despite its successful applications, the crosscorrelation approach also has its limitations. The main underlying assumptions are that the medium is lossles...
